Fine if pretty much completely disposable 70's Gothic Romance. Two phases: first Our Heroine's mysterious past is revealed and she marries against all expectations the Man of Her Dreams; then they go off to Egypt on an Archaeological Expedition and are threatened by mysterious forces, jealousy, and misunderstandings. Does Tybalt love the project more than he loves Judith? Has he married her only for her money? What is his relationship to Tabitha? Is the Pasha really the magnanimous patron that he seems, or is there something sinister beneath the surface? And so on?
So good escapist stuff in general. Two flaws bothered me. The ending is somewhat rushed and therefore a bit less than satisfying, and there's what seems to be a noticeable continuity glitch. The first chapter of the book is set sort of in the middle of the story; chapter two is a flashback to Judith's 14th birthday, and the rest of the book continues forward from there. But when we reach again the point in the story that chapter one told, the order of events is slightly different (the first time through, Sir Roger dies before Judith and Tybalt have admitted their love to each other; the second time, he dies shortly after). Writing lots and lots of genre novels is no excuse for shoddy workmanship!
But anyway, a nice easy book to escape into for a weekend or whatever, and that's all one expected of it after all.
