Uptight single librarian heroine, big bawdy artist friend, murder in the library, various clues, the bad guys eventually caught mostly just because they were stupid and our heroines were brave. The mystery is sort of thin; the ultimate explanation of who the bad guy was and why the murders happened seems deeply implausible, really just an afterthought.
But the characterization is quirky and good. Our heroine is neat and contained, controlled, more or less obsessive-compulsive. Her friend is big and boisterous and bawdy, and sleeps around. Their mutual oddnesses and long friendship are well-drawn and as illogical as real life. (The dark hints about mysteries and strange deaths in our heroine's past never lead to anything, unless it was subtle and I missed it.)
Worth the not very long that it took to read for the two main characters. But I think I'll be returning it to the Book Exchange rack.
